Abstract: This session will examine the global economic outlook amid current uncertainties and the role of central banks in navigating existing and future challenges. The global economy is operating in a complex and highly competitive environment, shaped by evolving inflation dynamics, shifting financial conditions, and the forward guidance of economic agents.
We will discuss:
• How will rising geopolitical risks affect the global economic outlook, and what role can central banks play in limiting potential spillovers?
• How does the US dollar shape national economies, and what is the expected path of the dollar going forward?
• Is the global economy facing a period of currency debasement, or are such concerns overstated?
• With debt levels rising across the world, what are the implications for monetary policy, and how are central banks likely to respond?

11:30-12:00: Keynote Speech

Christopher J. Waller, Federal Reserve Board, Governor

12:00-12:20: Special Address

• Panelist: Bank of Greece – Yannis Stournaras, Governor
• Panelist: Magyar Nemzeti Bank (the Central Bank of Hungary) – Mihály Varga, Governor

Abstract: We will discuss how diverging monetary policies, pricing mismatches in financial markets, and rising risks stemming from technological advances affect monetary policy decisions and transmission mechanisms.
We will discuss:
• How should a policymaker account for the spillovers and uncertainty? Do you think we will need to diverge from traditional monetary policy?
• After Covid-19 and after the current geopolitical tension, do you think the reaction functions of central banks are still successful or your reliance has shifted?
• How do you assess trade-off between the risk of expectations becoming unanchored when policy deviates from previous guidance, on the one hand, and the risk of greater information asymetry and a weaker transmission mechanism in the absence of forward guidance, on the other?
• How do you evaluate the effects of unpredictable global environment on monetary transmission mechanism?
• Do you think with the recent uncertainties, should policy makers be ready to adapt a more experimental approach rather than rule-based approach for inflation targeting?

• We will also consider whether there is a trade-off between these approaches, or whether an optimal policy mix can be designed to support external balances, price stability, and sustainable growth at the same time.
• We will discuss whether countries are likely to rely more on domestic demand going forward, how such reliance may affect inflation and inflation expectations, and whether monetary policy would remain effective in containing the inflationary pressures associated with domestic demand-led growth.
• We will discuss where economies are heading in the face of trade tariff shocks and rising uncertainty.
• We will also ask whether trade fragmentation will lead to financial fragmentation, and what can be done if free trade continues to deteriorate, with rising tariffs and their adverse effects on supply chains.
